Seattle Convention Center Opens Summit Building with Ribbon Cutting Event
1/26/2023
SEATTLE, WA - Yesterday, January 25, 2023, the Seattle Convention Center (SCC) celebrated the opening of its Summit building with a ribbon cutting event in the building’s atrium. The proceedings were overseen by SCC Board of Directors Chair Frank Finneran and featured remarks by Washington Governor Jay Inslee; State Treasurer Mike Pellicciotti; King County Executive Dow Constantine; Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell; SCC Board of Directors Vice Chair Deryl Brown-Archie; Pine Street Group’s Principal and Managing Partner Matt Griffin; and Monty Anderson, the Executive Secretary of Seattle Building Trades.

Reflecting on the ceremony, Visit Seattle’s President & CEO, Tammy Canavan FCDME says, “Today’s ribbon cutting was an inspiring event that reminds us what makes Seattle, King County, and the State of Washington exceptional. The number of public and private agencies that worked together to make this day a reality underlines how important this spectacular facility is to our community. We at Visit Seattle are excited to continue to build the momentum for Seattle’s convention business in that same spirit of collaboration and excellence.”

Aimee Peck, owner of Seattle staple Monorail Espresso welcomed Summits opening saying, “Conventions have always been great opportunities for us to represent Seattle’s vital coffee culture to visitors from all over the world. The Summit expansion is a new portal to this city’s small but important human-scale businesses like ours. We couldn’t be more excited for the energy and attention this new social hub will bring to downtown.”

Select coverage of the ribbon-cutting thus far can be seen in GeekWire, South Sound Business, and CW11.

Speaking to GeekWire, meetings professionals Aaron Bludworth of Fern highlighted the beauty of Summit while Kristina Rogers of ReedPop appreciated the building’s sensory and quiet rooms as well as the all-gender restrooms.

“We strive for inclusivity in all areas at [Emerald City Comic Con] and those little touches are what makes this new building feel like it was truly built with us in mind. Our entire team is excited and proud to welcome our fans home in this new space.” – Kristina Rogers, ReedPop (via Geekwire)

“The beauty of the facility is pretty unrivaled. There is no doubt when people see this building, they’re gonna want to come.” – Aaron Bludworth, Fern (via GeekWire)

In addition to the existing Arch building one and a half blocks away, Summit nearly doubles the capacity of the Seattle Convention Center. The newly opened building adds 573,770 square feet of event space including 62 meeting rooms; a 58,000-square-foot column-free and divisible ballroom featuring 3,900 suspended planks of reclaimed wood; 248,450 square feet of exhibit space; 140,700 square feet of naturally lit lobby space; and the 14,000-square-foot outdoor Garden Terrace. Covering 1.5 million square feet, Summit and Arch together create a campus built to usher in the future of meetings and conventions.

Please see the December press release for additional details on Summit here.
