International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) Sponsors Student Exhibition Design Competition at Expo! Expo! 2018
1/21/2019
The International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) sponsored an inaugural student exhibition-design competition at the organization’s Expo! Expo! 2018 Meeting and Exhibition in New Orleans. The competition was coordinated in conjunction with the Experiential Designers and Producers (EDPA) University Affiliation program. EDPA University Affiliation committee member Randal Acker and EDPA managing director Jeff Provost worked with IAEE leaders David DuBois, Cathy Breden, and Scott Craighead to create this opportunity for face-to-face marketing’s future designers.

The competition partnered with Bemidji State University, one of two educational institutions in the EDPA University Affiliation program with specific degrees and curriculum relating to exhibition, exhibit, and experiential design. Participating students were presented with an RFP that requested their designs for a brand activation area on the show floor of Expo! Expo! 2019, to be held at Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. Students were also charged with developing an activation theme, space and structure design, and pre- and post-show audience engagement ideas.

The students’ submissions had to address each of the following topics:
  1. Individual Engagement and Community Interaction
  2. Innovation: The Revolution of Solutions
  3. Giving Back: Corporate Social Responsibility
  4. International: Encourage a Global Spirit and Community
  5. Learning: Plan, Perform, and Lead
Fifteen Bemidji State exhibit-design students entered submissions, which were narrowed to three finalists that were judged by industry veterans at Expo Expo 2018. T3 Expo partnered on the competition and helped to showcase the finalists on the show floor. The students were also highlighted at the Awards Luncheon, where the winner was announced by Provost, Acker, and DuBois.

The winning submission was created by Kylee Beaver, and the two runners-up were designed by CeCealia Schultz and Lexie Tabbert.

“Design is a differentiator in our industry, and exhibit designers are problem-solvers,” said Acker, who is also the president of EXHIBITOR Media Group. “I applaud IAEE for creating this opportunity for our industry’s up-and-coming designers, as they are critical to our future. I was proud of the positive reactions these students’ design submissions garnered from Expo! Expo! Attendees and a thanks to Nate Derby and team from T3 Expo for making their work so visible.”

The concept of IAEE conducting a student design competition was a number of years in the making. In recent years there has been an increase in collaboration between IAEE, EDPA and EXHIBITOR Media Group. “IAEE’s Student Design Competition 2018 for Expo! Expo! 2019 was closely modeled after EDPA’s Student Design Competition for EuroShop 2011 which we repeated again for 2014 and 2017,” Provost added, “It takes the best parts of exhibition design thinking out of the classroom and puts it onto the show floor for these talented students. EDPA is proud to partner with IAEE and Exhibitor Media Group on such a worthwhile project. We look forward to seeing Kylee Beaver’s design come to life at Expo! Expo! later this year in Las Vegas.”

“IAEE is proud to partner with EDPA to provide a platform to spotlight student design at Expo! Expo!,” said IAEE President and CEO David DuBois, CMP, CAE, FASAE, CTA. “A well-designed booth or show floor activation pulls the attendee into the experience you are creating and this year’s competition really showcased innovative and forward thinking plans by these students.”
