At the 2022 International Consumer Electronics Show, Sleep Number Corp.'s goal was to get people into bed – its new 360 smart bed, that is. The company's rationale was simple: Physically demonstrating a smart bed's features is the best way to impress upon consumers what a superior, individualized sleep experience feels like. But how do you convince attendees to get horizontal for a product demo that lasts up to 4 minutes? Sleep Number began by enlisting the help of CenterPoint Marketing Inc. to create a disruptive, immersive, and interactive experience to attract and engage audiences at the electronics extravaganza.
Sleeping on the Job
Microsoft HoloLens 2 AR technology was paired with Unreal Engine, a real-time 3-D creation tool, to create immersive product demos where International Consumer Electronics Show attendees could see, feel, and hear about the benefits of Sleep Number Corp.'s new 360 smart bed.
Inspired by Sleep Number's corporate logo, the 50-by-50-foot design featured a 22-foot-tall cylindrical screen comprising nearly 400 LED tiles. Positioned in the center of the space, the towering element broadcast brand content that both attracted attendees and educated them on what makes Sleep Number beds so special. That impactful installation was surrounded by a half-dozen 360 smart beds, each in its own semicircular suite. Within each in-booth boudoir, staffers invited guests to lay down, don Microsoft HoloLens 2 headsets, and embark on their own virtual sleep-science journeys.

Half spheres hanging above each bed helped facilitate the augmented-reality experience by providing a matte-black background for holographic imagery synched with the 360 smart bed's features. For example, as audio content explained – and visual content illustrated – each feature, reposed prospects could feel the bed gently warming their feet, conforming to their bodies, raising their heads to alleviate snoring, and adjusting to the perfect position for an evening of optimized sleep. "This is truly an experiential space," said one Exhibit Design Awards judge. "Plus, even if you don't participate in the HoloLens demo, you're still drawn in to watch, learn, and engage." E
