Q.
I'm an introvert who has to work our trade show booth. How do I cope with this and not seem unfriendly?

A.
It can be extremely challenging for an introvert to deal with working a trade show booth. However, there are several strategies you can use to make it easier.

The first step is to prepare in advance: Plan and practice your talking points to feel more confident. It might seem counterintuitive, but having prepared talking points can make you more spontaneous because they can help reduce your anxiety and allow your conversations to flow more smoothly. Second, use welcoming body language. Even if you're not naturally outgoing, you can still convey openness by standing with an open posture, making eye contact, and smiling at visitors.

Just as important as talking is active listening. Showing genuine interest in your conversations with visitors encourages them to be more open. You can practice active listening by nodding, asking thoughtful questions, and summarizing and repeating what they say back to them. This will make the interaction more meaningful and enjoyable for both parties.

Set realistic goals for yourself, too. Instead of focusing on the sheer number of interactions that you conduct, concentrate on having meaningful conversations with a select few. By implementing these strategies, you can create a welcoming atmosphere at your booth while staying true to your introverted nature.E
