Ask Dan
Q.
I have a disability that slows me down at work, and my co-workers resent me for not being as fast as they are. How should I approach this?

A.
The first thing you should know is that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides some protection if you have a physical or mental impairment that significantly limits you. This could include visual, auditory, or mobility problems as well as mental illnesses.

If you haven't already done so, discuss your health status with your employer. In that meeting, request what's known in the ADA as a "reasonable accommodation" in doing your job. Some examples include installing a ramp, making materials available in large print, or even adjusting work schedules so employees with chronic conditions can finish their work at alternate times.

Next, you may wish to share with your boss that your co-workers resent you because you are slower than they are. Ask if he or she can explain to them, in general terms, that medical reasons affect your performance, the company backs you in this regard, and they should do the same.

Though you are absolutely under no obligation to do so, you may choose to explain to your co-workers that you wish you could work as quickly as they do but that your challenges prevent that. If you ask for their understanding, most people will happily rally around you and offer their sincere support, which will keep your relationship with them a healthy one. E
