Fancy Footwork
Amid the scramble to create fantastical overhead fixtures, well-appointed meeting spaces, and fanciful displays, it's easy to overlook another marketing canvas — exhibit flooring. Yet what's underfoot can be a powerful (if under-utilized) tool in exhibitors' arsenals. Why opt for a sterile white shag or uninspired gray vinyl when a carefully chosen, on-brand floor covering can add beauty, comfort, and cohesiveness to your booth space? Here, then, are six exhibits whose carpet choices are as easy on the eyes as they are on attendees' feet. By Claire Walling
A Walk in the Park
Exhibitor: Fairnet, a division of Leipziger Messe GmbH
Show: EuroShop
Design: Fairnet, a division of Leipziger Messe GmbH, Leipzig, Germany, 49-341-678-8406, www.fairnet.de
Woodland-themed flooring complemented this park-inspired exhibit for Fairnet, a division of Leipziger Messe GmbH. Faux-boardwalk paths were dotted with artificial trees and leaf-shaped benches, wrapping up attendees in the arboreal experience.
Powered Down
Exhibitor: GE Power & Water, a division of General Electric Co.
Show: Power-Gen Europe
Design: EP&M International, Albany, NY, 518-433-0043, www.epmexhibits.com
This exhibitor got technical with its flooring by embedding blueprints of a power plant into the raised platform at one corner of its booth. Blue LED lighting strips were imbedded within medium-density fiberboard coated with a high-gloss laminate finish to create some underfoot interest.
The Writing's on the Floor
Exhibitor: Expotechnik America Ltd.
Show: EXHIBITOR Show
Design: Expotechnik America Ltd., Suwanee, GA, 770-270-1120, www.expotechnik.com
Instead of proverbial writing on the wall, Expotechnik America Ltd. took its text to the floor instead. Words associated with the firm's design and project-management process were screen printed on the back side of Plexiglas cut into the shapes of the company's logo.
Light the Way
Exhibitor: Varian Medical Systems
Show: American Society for Therapeutic Radiation & Oncology
Design: Taylor Manufacturing Industries Inc. (aka The Taylor Group), Brampton, ON, Canada, 905-451-5800, www.taylorinc.com
To lure attendees into the core of its exhibit, Varian Medical Systems forged a flooring pathway for them. Colorful branded images printed on vinyl and backlit via light-emitting capacitor panels added visual interest to the meandering pathway's stark white flooring.
On the Spot
Exhibitor: DesignShop Display Communications Inc.
Show: EXHIBITOR Show
Design: DesignShop Display Communications Inc., Orlando, FL, 407-251-1800, www.teamdesignshop.com
The orange circles found on this carpeting for DesignShop Display Communications Inc. coordinated with the overall aesthetic and subtly delineated spaces for conversing with staffers, perusing info on tablet kiosks, and viewing photos and videos of past projects displayed on the back wall.
Natural Selection
Exhibitor: Scan Display Solutions Pty. Ltd.
Show: Meetings Africa
Design: Scan Display Solutions Pty. Ltd., Johannesburg, 27-11-4777, www.scandisplayct.co.za
Scan Display Solutions Pty. Ltd. went "au naturel" with the flooring for its open-air meeting area. Old pallets were rescued from the landfill, sanded down, and given a second life as raised exhibit flooring that struck the perfect balance between patio and Parquet.
