inding a way to effectively display small products is about as easy as taking away Snooki's teasing comb. That's why this stunning design for lighting firm Oligo Lichttechnik GmbH - which managed to highlight myriad miniscule products with ease - took home a Silver Award in this year's competition.
Created by Ueberholz GmbH and Bachmann.Kern& Partner, the exhibit featured an unusual color palette and
repetition of form. Bathed in a matte-black hue, the exhibit components seemed to fade into the background, leaving
the light fixtures as the main attraction. A total of eight black-scrim panels, whose top edges rose roughly 12 feet above the elevated floor, delineated the space on two sides of the exhibit. At the back of the booth, attendees found a reception desk, which featured nothing more than a suspended track-lighting system and Oligo's "feel the light" tagline.
While Oligo positioned a few products adjacent to the fabric scrim, the main product showcase dissected the center of the space. Here, designers covered a roughly 8-inch-tall platform with lime-green shag carpet. Resembling a strip of bright-green grass, the platform hosted 35 LED floor fixtures that seemed to sprout from the garden-like display.
According to Exhibit Design Awards judges, the multitude of fixtures juxtaposed with the faux-grass flooring created a whimsical air. "I almost expect the lights to start spinning and whiz around the space," one judge said.
Combining a masterful use of repetition with an ingenious color palette, this extraordinary exhibit assumed a supporting role, bowed out of the spotlight, and allowed the products to take center stage. e
