“Best Practices in International Exposition Designs” Symposium to Bring World Expo Design Lessons to the Exhibition Community
3/10/2023
The Institute for the Study of International Expositions announces its upcoming two-day online event on the experiential design lessons of World Expos March 23 and 24, 2023.

Following up on the success of its first annual symposium that drew a global audience to its groundbreaking work on world expos, the Institute for the Study of International Expositions (www.isie-global.org/) announced today its second gathering of experts on the mega-events commonly known in the United States as world’s fairs. The event will be co-hosted by Charles Pappas, senior writer, EXHIBITOR magazine.

Called “Best Practices in International Exposition Designs,” the two-day conference takes place on March 23 and 24, 2023, and will explore provocative lessons from both past and recent international expositions. The opening day will then close off with a special session called “Doing It Right.” In it, specialists reveal how the style of signage and wayfinding for Expo 2020 in Dubai was inspired by a centuries-old Bedouin weaving style, and the novel ways disabilities were addressed through the fair’s architecture and design policies. Another presenter will focus on the way screens and monitors can be the death of good design — and how designers can liberate themselves from the bland, glowing rectangles.

“For anyone in the exhibition industry, the symposium offers a master class in myriad aspects of experimental design on its grandest and most effective scale,” says Pappas, Senior Writer at EXHIBITOR magazine. “For almost 170 years, world expos have been the vanguard of design innovation that then trickles down to exhibition designers, whether it’s CES or KBIS, Blackhat or SXSW. There are takeaways for exhibits of any size, from the largest mega-booth right down to a 10-by-10.”

The second day kicks off with “Back to the Future,” where the minds behind of some of Expo 2020’s iconic structures — e.g., the Spain, Austria, Poland, Vision, and Opportunity pavilions — dive into the secrets behind these marvels. Following that, the “Things to Come” session will offer a tantalizing a forum for candidates from future Expos such as Osaka, Malaga, Minneapolis, and Odesa in Ukraine, to share a vison for how their master plans will set a new bar for experiential design.

About ISIE
ISIE is a new global interdisciplinary network of researchers interested in the design, promotion, reception, and consequence of the world’s fairs and expositions held since 1851. Though rooted in the history of architecture, science, diplomacy, art, and technology, our members hail from many disciplines and we welcome the participation of all those interested in exploring the many intersecting aspects of international expositions. Our first major event, the online symposium “International Expositions: Looking to the Past, Seeing the Future” held this past March, was attended by participants from more than 15 countries. (More details on ISIE and the 2022 symposium are available at https://www.isie-global.org/) This event served as a pivotal launching pad for a series of new initiatives currently in the works, including evolving the ISIE website into a valuable networking and disseminating tool for those involved in researching and planning international expositions, an upcoming publication from the symposium, and the ongoing speaker series.
