Baden-Württemberg's participation in Expo 2020 marks the first time the German federal state has built its own pavilion at a world expo. What’s more, it is the only German federal state — and the only region among more than 190 nations — to do so. Initiated by companies from the region, which borders France and Switzerland, and realized by Baden-Württemberg Expo 2020 Dubai GmbH, the Pavilion represents the Baden-Württemberg as a hub for innovation, business, research, tourism, and culture, as well as the perfect place for medium-sized and family-owned companies, corporations, and educational/research organizations.
The structure itself, formed around a supporting structure reminiscent of traditional Swabian timber framing, creates the illusion that it is hovering above the ground. Made from Baden-Württemberg spruce, the wooden slats were inspired by the mashrabiyya, a sunshade element typical in traditional Arabian architecture. The design is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also allows light to filter into the pavilion while providing shade during the midday hours.
In the pavilion’s Vision Lab, companies and educational institutions showcase their solutions and ideas to a broad, international audience in an exciting and interactive way. Important players from Baden-Württemberg present themselves not only as innovative "lone wolves," but also as partners in a strong network who work together on new solutions. In this way, the pavilion has become a lively place for exchanges and encounters.
In addition to an exciting exhibition with numerous innovations and pioneering projects from Baden-Württemberg, the pavilion also boasts a varied cultural program with fascinating performances, including dance, music, juggling, and magic, as well as cooking and fashion shows, film screenings, and a wide range of culinary delights representing the region. Even those who can’t make it to Dubai can still experience it all thanks to a digital version that enables people around the world to visit from the comfort of their own homes.
