Expo 2017 Awards:
Best Activity/Interactive
Germany Pavilion
To understand the delicate balance required when creating an intelligent energy mix, visitors to the Germany Pavilion participated in an interactive challenge that Expo 2017 Awards judges called "spectacular" and "brilliant." After stepping up onto a raised platform surrounding a conical pedestal with a circular flatscreen on top, attendees were instructed to balance the energy mix by getting an on-screen orb to rest in the center of the screen.
Graphics surrounding the embedded flatscreen segmented its radius, with each section representing a form of energy, such as solar and wind power. Like a digitized version of an old-school wooden labyrinth puzzle, the game required players to maneuver the on-screen orb by gently raising and lowering the platform. As if controlled by gravity instead of gamification, the orb moved toward the heaviest person atop the pedestal, requiring others to reposition themselves, shift their weight, and "roll" the orb toward the center.

Accommodating up to a dozen individuals at a time, the educational yet entertaining activity elicited quiet focus and determined expressions from vexed players as they inched toward accomplishing their mission.

Meanwhile, the game routinely generated cheers and applause from successful teams, attracting onlookers who promptly queued up for their opportunity to play.

Honorable Mention
Turkey Pavilion
Istanbul-based Dream Design Factory capitalized on selfie culture with this interactive element inside the Turkey Pavilion. After experiencing the various educational and interactive stations throughout the space, guests were invited to immortalize their own promises to use clean energy by placing their hands on a touch-sensitive flatscreen, smiling for the embedded camera, and sharing their cameo – and their commitment – via the social-media platforms of their choice.
