Korea Pavilion
Concept/Design/Fabrication: Sigong Tech Co. Ltd.

Expo 2017 Awards:
Best Use Of Technology
Korea Pavilion
The final zone of the three-part Korea Pavilion comprised a monochromatic room housing a forest of conceptual "energy trees." As they entered the space, visitors were issued tablet PCs embedded with augmented reality (AR) software. Beneath a lattice-like canopy that cast dappled light down upon them, guests became "energy citizens" and participated in the production, distribution, and consumption of virtual energy by way of educational, tablet-based activities.
Beacons inside each tree triggered one of eight different AR animations that depicted Korea's vision of a world powered by advanced technologies and sustainable solutions. Graphics at the base of each tree indicated which energy-related technology it represented, and as guests neared a particular tree, an activity related to that form of future energy was displayed on their tablets.

For example, when guests approached the tree dedicated to wind power, a 3-D icon appeared on their screens. By tapping the icon, they initiated an animated, gamified interaction. As a cartoon fuel-cell car cruised around a stylized representation of Korea's Jeju Island, onscreen graphics showed its battery being depleted. To energize the futuristic automobile, participants dragged a windmill icon into the waters surrounding Jeju, which recharged the car and displayed information on Korea's growing use of offshore wind power.

After completing as many of the AR activations as they wanted, visitors were encouraged to take a selfie using the tablets' embedded cameras. The photos were then uploaded and projected onto the "Energy Tree Wall," symbolizing that guests had become "energy seeds" capable of growing into energy-aware citizens of the future.

Honorable Mention
Netherlands Pavilion
Created by Expo Pavilion Group, Hypsos BV, Conspiracysinc, and Mann CG, the multilayer 3-D experience inside the Netherlands Pavilion fused NovaLine holographic technology and internally illuminated icons to create a visual symphony that detailed four iconic Dutch innovations: the nation's artistic achievements, the invention of the microscope, the utilization of wind power, and the development of greenhouse technology.
