or the Development Bureau, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, communicating the benefits of urban renewal required a layered approach. With the help of Oval Design Ltd., the bureau used blueprints, models, and video storytelling in its exhibit to explain how it would breathe new life into run-down neighborhoods.

From floor to ceiling, the booth told the story of renewal in Hong Kong, starting with the exhibit's underfoot inches, where enlarged photos detailed blighted neighborhoods and buildings. The space between the floor and ceiling was filled with architectural models and renderings, depicting the renewal efforts. Meanwhile, text in both Cantonese and English explained each project, with accompanying video presentations showing before-and-after footage.

Tree-shaped pillars inside the space supported a huge, curved ceiling element. Above each section of the exhibit, the ceiling comprised various layers that further explained the individual renewal plans.

On the inside, bottom layer, renderings and collages of blueprints represented the development efforts. The middle layer was made of a clear plastic shell that housed 3-D representations of buildings under construction. Finally, the top of the ceiling was covered with an undulating field of synthetic grass and miniature statues of people enjoying the kinds of outdoor activities made possible by the revitalization projects. "The layering of ideas was a clever concept and incredibly effective use of space," said one Exhibit Design Awards judge.

Overall, the structure resembled a two-dimensional drawing that was separated into its layered components, each of which combined to impart a simple, cohesive story of Hong Kong's planned rebirth.e

City Scenes

This exhibit for the Development Bureau, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region displayed three projects, represented in three different zones. The story began with photos of the sites to be redeveloped on the floor, plans and progress up the walls, and a look at the finished product atop a surreal, grass-covered ceiling.
