Richmond, Virginia Shares Virtual Cultural Experiences with Digital Audience

Richmond, Virginia is a vibrant destination full of Southern charm that stands out for its burgeoning culinary scene, eclectic art and cultural offerings, museums, boutique shopping, outdoor adventure and rich history. In this current climate, where people are staying at home, Richmond’s arts and cultural institutions as well as other small businesses are offering creative ways for an at-home audience to continue to enjoy much of Richmond from afar. From digital art exhibits, virtual markets and garden tours to online happy hours and events, Richmond is keeping the spirit of the community alive by inviting everyone to experience all that the diverse, vibrant destination has to offer. Below is a selection of the virtual experiences anyone can take advantage of from the comfort of their homes. Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden offers year-round beauty on a historic property with more than 50 acres of spectacular gardens, dining and shopping. Through the garden’s Virtual Visits, accessible through their website and social media channels, viewers can explore more than a dozen themed gardens including a Conservatory, Children’s Garden, Rose Garden, Asian Valley and Cherry Tree Walk. Activities for children, online learning and information about gardening at home can be found on the Garden’s Resources page. Maymont Maymont is one of Richmond’s greatest treasures, with over 100 acres of picturesque grounds and renowned gardens. Maymont is providing the opportunity to view these spectacular Japanese and Italian gardens from anywhere in the world by visiting the website to take a virtual tour through Maymont with Google Street View accompanied by an audio tour. Viewers are also invited to keep an eye on their animals via a 24-hour livestream webcam. Richmond Regional Tourism tRiViA Visit Richmond is testing locals and travelers’ knowledge of Richmond with a weekly game of Richmond Region Tourism trivia. Each week followers can participate in this challenging quiz, called tRiViA, which will include fun facts about the region, in addition to questions highlighting acts of kindness and ingenuity among the hospitality and small business community. Each week all of the winners will be entered to win a fun prize, with the first being a $10 gift card to a local business. The Virginia Museum of Fine Art (VMFA) The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has made some of their memorable collections accessible for online visitors to learn about the art and culture displayed throughout the museum. VMFA’s permanent collection encompasses nearly 50,000 works of art spanning 6,000 years of world history and through Google Arts & Culture, guests are able to view some of these incredible pieces. The VMFA is also offering four audio tours for more in-depth learning on topics such as Teen Tour: Art History is Not Linear, Hopper, Beyond the Label and Awaken: A Tibetan Buddhist Journey Toward Enlightenment. Virginia Museum of History & Culture The Virginia Museum of History & Culture is a major repository, research, and teaching center for Virginia history. The museum is currently offering a curated selection of digital resources for people interested in learning more from home. Currently on their website is 250 hours of recorded Banner Lectures that cover a variety of topics including Virginia history, business and industry, warfare, women’s history, African American history, popular culture and more. The VMHC also offers virtual tours of popular exhibits including the Story of Virginia and Landscapes of Virginia exhibits and soon to come online will be Determine: The 400-Year Struggle for Black Equality and Agents of Change: Female Activism for Women’s Suffrage. Additionally, VMHC is offering webinars, activities and more educational resources for students. Afrikana Independent Film Festival The Afrikana Independent Film Festival is dedicated to showcasing the cinematic works of people of color from around the world. Afrikana places a special focus on the global Black narrative with a mission to present high-quality, well-crafted stories that celebrate the diaspora and encourage people. The AIFF has curated a select list of underrated black classic films and the well-read ‘Black Girl’s List of Essential Readings’ that are perfect to enjoy during time spent home. They have also created the Afrikana’s “Rona Free” Audio playlist crafted by sonic curator Mike Kemetic. Kings Dominion Popular Richmond amusement park Kings Dominion is giving visitors the opportunity to digitally discover the excitement and thrill that the park has to offer from the comfort of their own homes. Guests can take a virtual ride on one of the park’s world-class roller coasters by visiting the Kings Dominion YouTube channel and watching the famous coasters in action from their own vantage point. People of all ages can also visit the website for instructions on how to create their own amusement park and rides. Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death Virtual Reenactment The Second Virginia Convention was held at Richmond’s St. John’s Church. Patrick Henry, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other prominent Virginians were delegates to the convention, and it was here where Patrick Henry embodied the spirit of the Revolution on March 23, 1775, with his words, “Give me liberty…or give me death!” Step back in time with this virtual reenactment.
