Q.
My boss wants to promote me, but I like where I am. How do I turn down the promotion without hurting my career?

A.
When turning down a promotion, it's important to handle it with tact and professionalism. Here are some steps I suggest you consider.

Before discussing your decision with your boss, spend some time reflecting on your career goals and reasons for wanting to stay in your current role. Consider the potential impact of accepting or declining the promotion on your long-term career aspirations. If you're comfortable with your choice, start the conversation with your boss by expressing your sincere appreciation for the opportunity and their confidence in your abilities. Next, clearly and concisely explain your reasons for declining the promotion. Focus on personal and professional factors that align with your career goals and values, and discuss your commitment to your current role and the value you bring to the team.

It's wise to reassure your boss that you're open to further discussions about your career growth and would welcome them when future opportunities arise. This could include taking on additional responsibilities and leading special projects within your current role. Then ask for their feedback on your decision as well as how you can continue to excel in your current role. By communicating your decision to your manager with a positive attitude, you can minimize any potential negative impact the decision could have on your career. E
