One of my staff has terrible body odor. How do I broach the sensitive topic without humiliating anyone?

A.
When addressing sensitive issues like this, be sure to approach it with empathy and tact. Here are some steps you can take.

Choose the right time and place to talk by finding a comfortable and private setting where you can have a one-on-one conversation without interruptions. Start with positive feedback by acknowledging their hard work and contributions. This helps create a positive atmosphere and shows that your intention is to help, not criticize. Use “I” statements to avoid sounding accusatory — for example, you could say, “I've noticed a strong odor in the office recently, and I wanted to discuss it.”

Be objective by focusing on the impact of the smell rather than any personal judgments. For example, you might mention that the odor is affecting the work environment or distracting colleagues. Next, offer support by suggesting solutions that may help address the issue. For instance, you can recommend seeing a doctor or propose bringing an extra set of clean clothes to work.

Throughout all of this, encourage the staffer to share their perspective. Assure them that the conversation will remain confidential to help them avoid further embarrassment. Finally, follow up later to see if they're taking steps to address the issue and offer ongoing support and encouragement if it's needed. E
