Q.
I started abstaining from alcohol for Dry January and plan on staying dry. My coworkers know this but pressure me to go drinking. How do I get them to understand?

A.
It's inspiring that you've made a conscious decision to abstain from alcohol and prioritize your well-being during Dry January and beyond! Peer pressure can be challenging, but there are a few ways to help your coworkers understand and respect your decision.

First, emphasize to them that it's an essential personal goal for you. Tell them that although you appreciate their invitation, staying dry is important. If they keep asking why, educate them — in a casual way — about the benefits of abstaining, such as improved sleep, increased energy, and overall better health. Explain that it's a growing trend, and many people participate to reset their relationship with alcohol. Suggest some non-drinking activities — going out for coffee or exploring local events. This way, you can all still socialize without you feeling left out.

If your coworkers continue pressuring you, politely but firmly reiterate your commitment to staying dry, and ask them to respect your choice. If the peer pressure becomes overwhelming, consider seeking support from other coworkers who share your values or joining online communities of people who participated in Dry January. Stay true to your goals, and be proud of all the positive changes that you're making for yourself. E
