      Monaco Pavilion

Expo 2017 Awards: Best Small Pavilion
      Monaco Pavilion
Within moments after stepping into Monaco's pavilion, guests encountered a colossal – yet calming – wave-like structure. Entering through a corridor of blue-tinged, mirrored surfaces and marine imagery, they came upon a kinetic sculpture the size of a humpback whale. Measuring 50 feet long, the installation comprised 36 individual mirrored panels, each as tall as a two-story structure. Oscillating around a single central axis, the mirrored pieces independently glided up and down in dream-like strides, reflecting the cerulean lighting and surreal, conceptual imagery projected on the pavilion's flooring.
The kinetic contraption captivated guests with oceanic scenes and glimpses of Monaco perched on its rocky outcropping. The extensive use of mirrored surfaces allowed the projected images of natural and man-made environments to reflect off one another, subtly signifying the symbiosis between the two and underscoring Monaco's theme of "Mirroring the Future."

Wading further into the pavilion, audiences encountered a trio of Oculus Rift headsets that allowed them to "visit" Monaco, albeit virtually. Nearby, a projection-mapped installation depicted Monaco's effort to reclaim roughly 100 acres of land using artificial reefs and buildings that generate their own power. Closing out the experience was the Monaco Green Lab, where seven black-and-white infographics sprang to life with vivid iconography, illustration, and information when touched by attendees. Triggered by motion-activated projectors, the colorful content described the small country's successful environmental efforts, from lowering carbon dioxide emissions to developing the first aircraft capable of being fueled by nothing but sunlight.

      Honorable Mention
      Singapore Pavilion
Singapore's pavilion, created by Zarch Collaboratives Pte Ltd. and Pico Art International Pte Ltd., lured attendees with a facade of galvanized iron pipes and a hypnotic soundscape of solenoids clacking rhythmically against the bone-white scaffolding. After exploring the pavilion's six educational zones, guests penned their wishes for a more sustainable world before affixing their notes to a massive, stylized "tree of life" structure.
