The concept behind the India Pavilion is inspired by and reflects the overall themes of Expo 2020, which are sustainability, mobility, and opportunity. The pavilion pays homage to the cultural multifariousness of India while nurturing the idea of the country as a pool of opportunities for investment and collaboration. The design celebrates India’s 75 years of Independence through its façade, which comprises of 600 individual blocks that move using kinetic architecture. Through 75 individual stories, the façade engages visitors through the charm of storytelling throughout the day — familiarizing them with the history, geography, and literature of the country. In the evening, the façade turns into a vibrant show with sound, light, and projection, creating a festival-like atmosphere.
Under the theme “India on the Move,” the pavilion amplifies the country’s position on the global stage as a thriving hub of limitless possibilities, showcasing futuristic approaches in mobility while also projecting the Indian story via a globally appreciated narrative.
As sustainability was one of the key objectives, designers integrated climatological influences of the region via technology. The chakra on top of the amphitheater is designed using steel construction with modular steel components that can be recycled. Throughout the building, low carbon emitting materials such as low VOC paints and locally sourced tiles have been used. In fact, 60 percent of the materials have been locally sourced to ensure a reduced carbon footprint. Radiant floor also serves as an air conditioning system, which helps keep the building cool even after the system is shut down and ensures energy savings to the tune of 15 percent.
The pavilion successfully condenses the vastness of India’s culture and cityscape within its walls. For example, India’s astronomical heritage is represented by a replica of the Jantar Mantar, dating back 700 years, which is seamlessly fused with the pavilion itself. Additionally, the experience inside the pavilion encompasses 11 themes. Upon entering the building, guests are fascinated by a starry space guiding them through India’s accomplishments in space exploration. As a land of tranquility and healing, live yoga is performed in front of projected mandalas. A walk inside a giant radium helps visitors understand the many benefits of Ayurveda while simultaneously apprising them with India’s significant contributions to the world in terms of physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness.
Meanwhile, the colors of India are showcased in an immersive environment created by LED walls that envelop viewers in culture and heritage. Mesmerizing installations also help exhibit India’s diverse culture. For example, the second floor positions India as a land of endless opportunities. A state-of-the-art theatre hosts meetings, conferences, cultural shows, reception, and film screenings.
