The pavilion for Emirates Airline is an educational, personalized, and thought-provoking experiential journey designed to give each visitor a unique, curated experience like no other. Utilizing a suite of the latest technologies, the pavilion immerses guests in messages that reinforce the Expo 2020 themes of “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future,” as well as the sub-themes of mobility, opportunity, and sustainability.
The theme of the Emirates Pavilion is “The Future of Commercial Aviation,” and the towering four-story structure (inspired by an aircraft’s wings taking flight — with 24 aluminum-clad fins that curve around two sides of the building) features a 2,600-foot LED system that illuminates in vibrant colors at night.
Inside, visitors experience content through a series of personalized interactive displays, which form their individual experiential journey. First, guests begin by collecting a “seed” that enables the rest of the experience and captures each visitor’s interactions and experiences, which will later be played back during a multisensory finale. Next up, educational holographic visualizations demonstrate how aircraft will achieve flight by illustrating the physical properties of lift, thrust, gravity, and drag.
The Cleaner Skies installation is an immersive experience that demonstrates how future innovations are directly linked to some of the world’s biggest issues, such as sustainability and population growth. Here, visitors challenge each other in an interactive quiz about aviation technologies being developed to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. After that, guests step into the Future Lab to run experiments carried out by robotic arms, demonstrating the technologies that will make the aircraft of the future faster, lighter, and stronger.
Meanwhile, interactive screens deliver a series of animations that explore future engine and fuel technologies, such as hypersonic, hydrogen, hybrid, and electric options, highlighting the impact they will have on emissions as well as comfort.
Next, putting their knowledge to the test, visitors are invited to design and fly their own personalized, futuristic aircraft. Through an ultra-haptic interface, visitors build their aircraft by choosing from different types of engines, wings, etc., running it through a flight simulator, and getting instant feedback on their design decisions.
Additional highlights include the Airport of the Future, where guests learn how biometrics, data analytics, and smart technologies will transform the passenger experience, as well as a virtual-reality activity that enables participants to explore the aircraft interiors of the future. Finally, the experience culminates in a 360-degree, multisensory, cinematic experience that combines dynamic storytelling and stunning 3-D motion graphics with the information obtained while touring the pavilion itself.
