Even before the first Coppertone suntan product had appeared on the market, the sunless-tanning industry in the United States was heating up. At this 1949 Annual Vending Machine Convention in Chicago, a model demonstrated the new Sun-Tan Lotion spray-on dispenser that shellacked users with a golden glaze in a mere 30 seconds. While the coin-operated machine faded away quickly, tanning's popularity endured, deepening by 2013 into a $5 billion industry comprising more than 22,000 tanning salons, health clubs, and spas.
