If you've seen one iPad kiosk, you've seen 'em all, right? Au contraire. At The Car Wash Show 2012, Belanger Inc. cranked it up a notch with a four-pronged beauty that also offered a nod to its car-wash systems. The kiosk featured four 4-foot arms that sprouted at an angle from the base. The arms, each of which had an iPad on its end, were internally lit tubes that mimicked the glowing neon tubes that are trademark features of the company's car-wash systems. Pairing info delivery with the look and feel of the company's products, the iPad kiosk was awash with success.
Weight, What?
To show attendees at the PhotoPlus International Conference and Expo that its bags are among the lightest on the market, Kata (a division of Manfrotto Bags Ltd.) devised the Kata Weigh-In Contest. The challenge was simple: Guess the weight of the bag and its contents. Each day of the show, Kata displayed a different bag filled with various items. On day one, visitors saw a backpack filled with 12 apples and suspended from a rope. Attendees used one of two tablet PCs to "like" Kata's Facebook page and submit their guess. The participant with the closest guess won that day's bag, while Kata netted 1,200 new Facebook fans who heard the lightweight claims loud and clear.
Trash Talk
Most exhibitors wouldn't want a bunch of trash littering their booth space. But Mason Greenstar Inc. welcomed the detritus, proudly displaying it in one corner of its 10-by-10-foot space at the 2012 World of Concrete. A 3-foot-tall, clear-acrylic column held a mound of ground-up paper peppered with lottery tickets and a phone book sticking out of the top. Attendees often stopped to inquire about the tower, as staffers explained how the materials inside are used to manufacture the company's Greenstar Blox, building blocks that are made from discarded phone books, newspapers, and lottery tickets. Those interested in learning more were given business cards printed on 100-percent recycled paper, and were invited to scan a Quick Response (QR) code on the column that directed them to a site containing info on the eco-friendly blocks.

Mixin' it Up
Presentation matters, for sometimes it's not about what you distribute in your booth as much as it is about how you distribute it. At the 2012 American Academy of Nurse Practitioners show, the Almond Board of California wanted to send attendees home with a sample of its various California Almonds. But rather than just offering bowls full of the tasty treats, the Almond Board came up with a sort of "create your own trail mix" distribution station. Here, a single staffer manned a scooper and roughly six bowls filled with nuts, chocolate chips, and small crackers. As attendees approached, he talked to them about California Almonds as he created their own custom-blended trail mix according to their directions. Attendees went nuts over the clever giveaway, which attracted long lines throughout the show. Meanwhile, the Almond Board satiated visitors' hunger and educated them on its nutritious, delicious product.
Carpet Squares
Hoping to elevate its carpet to new artistic heights â?" and score some awareness in the process â?" Kane Carpet displayed its patterned flooring in a gallery-style setting at the 2012 Surfaces show in Las Vegas. Framed like priceless paintings in a museum, and lit via wall-mounted pendants, the samples not only added a dramatic flair to Kane's space, but they also allowed visitors to more easily peruse the product lines. Rather than attendees having to dig through samples in bulky binders or drawers, just eyeing the walls lined with framed flooring gave them an idea of which lines interested them the most. Pedestals below each frame offered additional, similar prints in different colors and variations, so prospective clients could explore even more of Kane's artful offerings.
Dressed for
Success
Adopting the tagline "Dress Your Gadget" at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show, Uniq, a Singapore-based manufacturer of mobile-electronics cases, employed a product display that was equal parts unusual and appropriate. More than a dozen of its stylish cases for netbooks, tablet PCs, and smartphones were displayed on the back wall of its 10-by-20-foot space, dangling from white wooden hangers. Looking more like high-end scarves, the cases were perfect for Uniq's "Dress Your Gadget" tagline, urging passersby to stop and shop for the design that best "fit" their personal style.
Jump Around
We all know it's important to save energy. But what does it really take to generate the juice we're always working to conserve? At EXHIBITOR2012, Pico North America enlightened booth visitors by hosting a dance party inside its "Pico Activation Zone." The "Zone" comprised a 7.5-by-10-foot platform checkered with 2-foot-square tiles that, when stepped on, sunk down a half inch while lighting up and actually generating electricity. Dancers invited attendees to join them on the platform, where the energy generated from dancing on the tiles was channeled and used to "unlock" a slide show of Pico's portfolio. A nearby 52-inch monitor displayed the quantity of joules generated by the dancers. Meanwhile, Pico staffers explained the technology behind the fun, and how attendees could incorporate the eco-friendly activity into their own exhibits.
