Malaysia Pavilion

In keeping with the Expo 2012 theme of “The Living Ocean and Coast,” the theme of the Malaysia Pavilion is “Malaysia’s Biodiversity Haven: A Gift from Nature,” with a sub-theme of “A Sea of Life, a Harmony of Living.”

“A Sea Of Life” directly addresses the environmental focus. Malaysia is situated at the heart of the world’s richest marine habitat, a place where some scientists believe the marine creatures of the Pacific Ocean evolved. This phrase also immediately and unmistakably conveys the idea of “abundance,” referencing the immense biodiversity found in Malaysia’s rich waters.

“A Harmony Of Living” aptly reflects the core essence of Malaysia. The country is not only a good example of the “vital connection and interaction between ... human beings and the ocean” that Expo 2012 seeks to explore, it is also an outstanding model of multicultural and multiracial harmony. It’s as though some “invisible glue” holds citizens’ varying and diverse elements together in Malaysia more than most other places on Earth. In this light, the pavilion’s focus is very much on the harmonious connection of the environment and people.

The entire Pavilion underscores the conservation work carried out to maintain Malaysia’s beautiful natural resources. Conservation and sustainability themes have been woven into each area within the Malaysia Pavilion, highlighting the tangible benefits of conservation, from Malaysia’s clear waters that support abundant marine life to the lush rainforests with their diverse flora and fauna. In this way, visitors will learn to better appreciate the nation’s conservation efforts.

Walking through the Malaysia Pavilion is like taking a conceptual “journey” that begins underwater, moves through vibrant corals reefs, islands, mangroves, and finally ends on a blaze of colour and sound celebrating unique cultures and traditions. Based on this sea-to-land concept, the Malaysia Pavilion is sectioned off into seven core areas: Malaysia’s Geoheritage, The Living Reef, Islands of Dreams, Haven of Biodiversity: Mangroves, Haven of Biodiversity: Rainforest, Land of Harmony, and Green Innovations.

The Pavilion presents the essence of Malaysia within an environmental or Green context, balancing the needs of both Expo 2012 and the Malaysian nation. Careful consideration has been given to the choice of material used within the pavilion. For example, recycled materials such coconut -shell boards have been used for finishing, along with eco-friendly materials such as recyclable food packaging, energy-efficient LED lighting, and earth-friendly laminates for wall and floor coverings. In a similar manner, QR codes have been used throughout the pavilion to disseminate information rather than printing leaflets.
