Exterior Design: Famous for its status as a yachting city-state, Monaco wrapped the top of its pavilion in five tiers of blue-tinted pipes through which a small ocean of water continually flows. Made of entirely recycled glass, the pipes circulate captured rain and reclaimed water from air-conditioners. Clouds, wind, and even the dust in the air cause minute visual variations in the light that passes through the pipes, thus constantly “painting” the pavilion and its surroundings in ever-morphing pools and ripples of light.

Pavilion Summary: Cooled by the circulating rings of water filtering through the transparent tubes, the pavilion offers attendees a sanctuary from Shanghai’s notorious heat and a primer on Monaco’s past and future. Visitors start with “Monaco, a rock for eternity,” a six-minute animated film showing on a 184-foot, high-definition screen that takes viewers back to prehistoric times and its later origins as a Greek and Roman port. Afterward, they can walk along a replica of Monaco’s streets to explore its flora and fauna, and then stroll through a portrait gallery of the country’s rulers, including film legend Princess Grace.

To promote the country’s Green efforts, the pavilion installed another section using videos and projections that highlight Monaco’s ecological innovations. Touting its status as one of the world’s premier Grand Prix racing sites since 1929, Monaco included a special area devoted to the Formula One race, with videos of the high-speed competition and a display showing off the Venturi Volage, a battery-powered prototype for eco-friendly racecars. Combining both Green and racing even more, another part of the exhibit focuses on Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), which turns racecars into hybrids by transforming energy into electrcity that powers the automobiles without needing to resort to more fossil fuels.
