Bowman Design Group Creates Interactive Exhibit for Marian Koshland Science Museum

12/13/2007 - Bowman Design Group, in collaboration with design director, Ed Hackley, has created a new interactive exhibit, Infectious Disease: Evolving Challenges to Human Health, for the Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences, located in Washington, DC. This third partnership between Bowman, Hackley and the museum provides visitors with an in-depth view of the microbial world that surrounds us and explores the challenges facing researchers as they work to identify and control infectious diseases.

The 1,500-sq. ft., multi-generational exhibit engages and educates museum visitors with a variety of interactive and multi-media displays. These allow visitors to:
* See the effect of different vaccination levels on the spread of seasonal influenza and measles.
* Watch the continuous process of evolution starting with a single E. coli bacterium.
* Investigate the global distribution of a variety of infectious diseases.
* Explore the impact of public health measures, such as clean water, on the distribution of disease.
* Decide how to treat a tuberculosis infection and see the results of those decisions.
* Understand the HIV life cycle and some of the public health measures and medicines that are available for treating HIV.

The Marian Koshland Science Museum selected the Bowman+Hackley team for its proven ability to accurately interpret complex scientific information, and then develop interactive displays, which communicate that information clearly.

‘Tom Bowman has the ability and the willingness to grapple with complex information. He understands the importance of making the science accurate and he gives the exhibit appeal with sophisticated designs and wonderful visual aesthetics,’ says Erika Shugart, deputy director of the Marian Koshland Science Museum and curator of the infectious disease exhibit. Previous exhibits developed for the Marian Koshland Science Museum are 'Global Warming: Facts and our Future' and 'Putting DNA to Work'.

Los Angeles-based Bowman Design Group translates complex ideas into engaging stories. The results are unique and memorable exhibitions, events, multimedia, and print communications for corporations, museums, and other institutions. Clients include the National Academy of Sciences and Scripps Institution (in collaboration with Ed Hackley), Florida Crystals, Clif Bar, Northrop Grumman, Kid City (The Children’s Museum of Tampa), and World Cup USA 1994. The Marian Koshland Science Museum engages the general public in an exploration of the current scientific issues that affect their lives. The museum's state-of-the-art exhibits, public events, and educational programs provide information that stimulates discussion and provides insight into how science supports decision-making.
